Slow days on the Udupi coast
Quieter than Goa, greener than you expect, and never far from a very good meal. Everything below is within an easy reach of the house.
01
Coastal cuisine
Food in Udupi goes far beyond the vegetarian meals the region is famous for. Along the coast, seafood is central to everyday culture: fresh catch prepared with coconut, spice, curry leaves, and generations of tradition.
For evenings, nearby Manipal brings a youthful energy with its cafes, breweries and pubs, a contrast to the calm of the coast.
Dishes to try: Masala dosa, goli bajje, idli-vada, Mangalore buns, kori rotti, ghee roast, neer dosa, fish fry, payasa, holige

Heritage
Udupi boasts a rich history and spiritual significance spanning centuries. At its heart lies the Sri Krishna Temple, where rituals, architecture and devotion continue to shape the identity of the town.
Elsewhere, the beautifully preserved Hastha Shilpa Heritage Village offers a glimpse into traditional homes and the craftsmanship of coastal Karnataka. The serene Our Lady of Fatima Church in Perampally and the ancient Kere Basadi further reflect the region's cultural diversity.

Islands, beaches and viewpoints
Unlike the beaches of Goa, Udupi's coastline remains quieter, slower and largely untouched by heavy tourism. You will not find crowded party scenes or rows of commercial beach resorts here, and that is precisely its charm.
It is also one of those rare destinations where you enjoy the coast as well as the lush green mountains of the Western Ghats.
